The site is a unique example of heath habitat in the Czech Republic. Thanks to varied habitat conditions and especially its locality on the border of the Pannonian and continental areas, Havraníky Heath is one of the most species-rich sites in Podyjí National Park.
In addition to common heather (Calluna vulgaris), the community is characterized by species such as hairy greenweed (Genista pilosa), sheep's-bit scabious (Jasione montana), thrift (Armeria maritima) or the yarrow species Achillea collina. The site is a refuge of a large number of species of conservation importance. Among the endangered flora, we can mention an extremely large population of greater pasque flower (Pulsatilla grandis) or early star-of-Bethlehem (Gagea bohemica). Orchids are represented by innumerable green-winged orchids (Orchis morio). Other important species include purple mullein (Verbascum phoeniceum), goldilocks aster (Aster linosyris), broom-leaf toadflax (Linaria genistifolia), and the broomrape species Orthantha lutea.
The site is also important for many invertebrates, of which the most important are steppe elements of the Pannonian area. Neuroptera are represented by Styrian praying lacewing (Mantispa styriaca) or the antlion Myrmecaelurus trigrammus (the only site in the Czech Republic). Important Orthoptera include the abundant saddle-backed bush cricket (Ephippiger ephippiger) or the predatory bush cricket (Saga pedo). As for diurnal butterflies, the site is abundant in the population of false grayling (Arethusana arethusa), dryad (Minois dryas) or woodland grayling (Hipparchia fagi). Havraníky Heath is also one of the most important refugia of chaste pellicle (Watsonarctia casta) in the Czech Republic. Podyjí heaths also host a rich fauna of beetles. Phytophagous groups are represented by knapweed root weevil (Cyphocleonus achates) and weevil Rhinusa brondelii. In the heath litter, there is a remarkable relict weevil Trachyphloeus rectus. Thanks to grazing, the scarab beetles Euoniticellus fulvus and Sisyphus schaefferi, unobserved for years, have appeared in recent decades. Among the more striking animal species, for example, Eurasian hoopoe (Upupa epops) and woodlark (Lullula arborea) can be found, both very typical for heathland. The shrubs host red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) and barred warbler (Sylvia nisoria), for which the Special Protection Area was established in Podyjí.
